Summary: Robotoolz RT-7692-2XP
Comment: I own the Porter Cable RT-7690-2XP laser, which is made by Robotoolz. When I inquired about the differences between the RT-7690-2 and the XP model I was told the only difference was the XP was brighter.

Basically what this unit does is project a level or plumb red laser light line either horizontal, vertical or both at once on a surface. These lines can be projected on a 360-degree axis or just a partial line can be projected.

Included with the laser unit is red plastic glasses, an AC adapter, a wall mount bracket to hold the laser, a hand held remote control that will remotely control all the functions of the unit (the remote control also doubles as a laser detector). Also included is a bracket to hold the remote/detector if it is to be place on a grade pole or other surface. All of these items are packaged in a foam lined plastic case.

The RT-7690-2XP laser unit is housed in a plastic shell with a painted finish. The painted finish is not that durable so typical job site use will cause abrasion to the paint. This is only cosmetic and does not inhibit the function of the laser. The laser is self-leveling so set up is quick.

Since all laser functions can be controlled by the control panel on the back of the laser unit or by the remote, using the unit it is quite simple. Attach the unit to a reasonably level solid surface where movement is minimized. Power up the laser unit by using 4 D-cell batteries or the included AC adapter. Flip the pendulum lock up to the ON position. The green power light will blink while the laser self levels itself then the light will go solid when ready to use, this takes about 5 seconds.

Select the desired laser function either rotating horizontal, rotating vertical or both at once. The other option is the line dither mode, which gives you a partial solid level line, either horizontal or vertical. The length of the dither line is determined by how close the laser is to the reflected surface and by one of selected 6 available line lengths. The dither line can be adjusted to project any where on the 360-degree horizontal or vertical axis. The remote makes adjustments fast and easy.

All rotational red lasers that I have seen are very dim or invisible when used outdoors, especially in sunlight. This unit is no exception. If using outdoors I would suggest not using the rotational mode, set the laser as close to the work surface as possible and use the line dither mode. The laser light in the line dither mode is much brighter and the shorter the line segment the brighter the line will be. Using the red glasses will help in seeing the laser line. Using the laser detector will also aid in finding the line in bright light. Doing your set up in the early morning or late evening when the ambient light levels are at their lowest will also help.

For Indoor use the laser line is quite visible in all modes. To get the most out of this unit indoors I would suggest purchasing a 3rd. Hand telescoping support pole made by Fastcap. There is also a support bracket made for this pole to hold a laser unit. The adjustable pole telescopes and locks between the floor and ceiling so the laser unit can be mounted almost anywhere.

I have found the unit to be extremely accurate, easy to set up, easy to use and does what the unit was designed to do. Until the green laser, which is much brighter arrives on the scene the self-leveling red laser is still the best game out there.

Summary: the BEST .... guys with one star rating are NUTS and handicapped!
Comment: Have used this laser level for 3 years now. VERY accurate. VERY easy to use. Installed a septic leach field just recently and was PERFECT. I too am an architect and am not sure what was wrong with the other architect except that perhaps he is from New Hampshire! Liberals don't like to follow instructions!

Summary: Junk
Comment: I am very disappointed with this tool. We just wasted approx. $3,000 worth of blocks by relying on this level for the layout of our leveling course.
Over a distance of 90 feet, this unit was over an inch off. Even after recalibration the tolerances were still way off.

Summary: Porter Cable...shame on you!!!
Comment: There isn't enough room in this message to explain how disgusted I am with this product. I am an architect/contractor and when I'm not designing, I'm in the field getting my hands dirty with my crew. My company recently branched into the excavation end of things to free ourselves from unreliable subcontractors. Besides an excavator itself, the must have tool for excavation is the rotary laser level. Now I must tell you that my company swears by Porter Cable. Every tool in our trailer bares the name Porter Cable...there just isn't a better brand out there in my opinion. So without hesitation, I bought Porter Cable's rotary laser level. After following the "Turning on the laser" instructions to the letter, the device sits there and beeps at me and then shuts itself off. I tried calibrating it and even that didn't work. It finally started to move instead of beeping and then I couldn't stop it from moving...and THEN it shut itself off. Self-Leveling???...I don't think so...after it finally did do it's thing, the rotary laser was noticeably out of level. Not one single feature of this device worked! I read the instruction manual three times cover to cover before I went to the "Robotoolz" website for help. Come to find out there is a "Pendulum Lock" located below the laser that needs to be unlocked before use. Well, there is no mention of said pendulum lock ANYWHERE in the instructions. There isn't even an arrow pointing to it in the "features" diagram...nothing. I searched for two hours for this lock and can't find it anywhere other than in a verbal description in the FQA's section of the robotoolz web page. I even brought out my magnifying lens and couldn't find anything resembling a lock of any kind. This device is going right in the dumpster where it belongs...well, back to the Robotoolz company for a full refund with a copy of this letter, as well as a copy to Porter Cable. Shame on you Porter Cable...if you are going to attach your name to trash like this, I will think twice before making any more PC purchases.

Summary: Easily the best value for the price
Comment: Owned my own business for 10 yrs, Union carpenter for 20 yrs. I don't recommend a tool lightly but I recommend this laser without reservation. In the Last 2 yrs I've used this to remoddle 2 Stop and Shop stores, 1 school, and Electric Company switching station and a Health Care Clinic. The companies I work for usually have several different lasers on the job but everyone tries to get to the toolbox first for the Porter Cable. Best value for the money. It's definately on a par with any laser out there. Don't waste your money buying a more expensive unit.

Pros; Price
Accurate and "repeatable" marking up to about 100'
Remote allows for easy one person setup and to turn unit
on only when needed saving battery life
Dither mode
Good case
Pendulum lock for transporting
Operates off 110 or batteries
Bright laser beam

Cons;
Button layout allows you to accidentally change position
of laser after it's been setup.
Doesn't come with rechargeable batteries
The remotes all use the same frequency so if you have more
than 1 unit on the job you may be adjusting more than
your own laser

Editorial Reviews:
