Customer Rating: Summary: Worth the dollars Comment: I didn't find these bits much harder to set up than any other rail and stile bit set and the results are worth the effort. I agree that Freud could/should include more info for those that need it but information is available from other sources. I got curious after reading some of the reviews that were critical and did a quick google search. Google "American Woodworker June 2001" and you will find a good review that covers the setup for the bits.
Previous advice about keeping setup blocks is also good and I do that with all my bit sets.
Customer Rating: Summary: Strictly Trail and Error Comment: I agree with the first two reviews. These are fussy bits to set up and there are not any directions from Freud to help you get started. Its not like a normal door set because you need to keep in mind that any height or fence change also effects the recoverable bead. I have a Jessem lift also and that accuracy really helps determine which way to go. Just make sure that you have pleny of extra stock with the exact same dimentions for this trial and error process. I have not seen any instructions or set-up blocks for this set. I would liken it to using a miter lock bit, it takes time but once it set-up the end product is beautiful.
Customer Rating: Summary: Review correction Comment: Both previous reviewers explained a process that's typical of router bit set up. Freud most likely couldn't provide better instrutions if they wanted to. Carpentry skills are rarely included in the purchase price of tools. A smart shop man would save a piece of the cut once he is happy with the set up. This makes for quicker set up in the future. I believe Rockler sells templates for at least some lay outs. Now that you put an edge on a piece of 3/4 stock put the same edge on a piece of 1 3/8 stock for a set of french doors. Gee, that's a whole new proccess! Too define is too limit! Use your imagination!
PS the bits are great.
Customer Rating: Summary: Frustrating bits...but do the job well. Comment: I just used these bits last night and had a heck of a time setting them up. When I finally did get them set they did a great job. Here is what I did - for the stick cut I lined up the black middle cutter with the center line of my 3/4" stock and made my cut. You can adjust from there if you wish. For the cope cut I had to use trial and error until I had a proper fit. Using a router lift like a JessEm works great for this. 3 stars to Freud for not including any instructions, 5 stars for the way the cutters cut. Don't bother calling Freud, they do not respond. HEY FREUD, HOW ABOUT SOME INSTRUCTIONS!!!!! CAN YOU HERE US NOW!!!!
Customer Rating: Summary: Frustration Comment: Freud 99-280 Recoverable Bead Glass Door Bit Set, do a beautiful job once you have zeroed in on the right settings. However doing that is a VERY difficult job, and is really frustrating. The problem is exacerbated by the fact that Freud mysteriously provides no instructions , diagrams or even any recommendations for their use. I have tons of Freud blades and router bits, and my biggest complaint is they almost never have any instructions. The biggest problem with this bit set is when you remove the glass bead. If you are of a 32nd of an inch the tenons will be either to short or to long, and in the earlier case there is no way to correct it. I will still buy Freud products, but I wish they would spend a few bucks and create an instruction manual. Many of their competitors have already done so.
