Summary: Porter-Cable Variable speed router
Comment: I recently purchased a Porter-Cable 2 1/4 variable speed router from Amazon.com. It was only the second time that I had purchased a piece of woodworking equipment from Amazon.com (my first purchase was the Lonnie Bird set of CMT crown molding router bits). Although I have been a woodworker for more than 20 years I have previously always purchased from a specialized woodworking site.

In both instances that I purchased from Amazon, Amazon priced the same item significantly cheaper than the specialty woodworking sites. In both cases my equipment arrived in record time and in mint condition.

I bought the P-C router to use in my router table where I employ an older router lift which required a smaller diameter motor than most of the more recent industrial strength routers--but I needed the variable speed to handle free-hand routing of curved pieces (which I have learned--by painful experience--work much better when the router speed is dialed down). The model 892 fit my router lift and the slower motor speed helped me do the job more safely and with less stress. I am very happy with this purchase.

Summary: Do not buy this router!!!!!!!!!
Comment: I purchased this router in July of 07 and have never been able to use it. I have sent it in for repair three times and have received three seperate new motors. All of them have un acceptable runout. .060-.090 or more. The runout is so bad that the router actually shut off when I tried to turn a panel bit. You can visably see the wobble if you put a large 1/2" flush trim bit in it. I even went through the trouble to video tape my tests using a dial indicator, i clamped the motor to my cabinet saw and placed a 1/2 straight bit using the shaft as a referance and received almost a 3/4 swing on the indicator, I then moved the same collet and bit into and old PC router (rockwell) with results of .001 in runout, very acceptable in a 10 year old well used router. I sent them the videos and they still say they are finding no problems..... Basically if you bought a PC tool 10 years ago you will love it, if you buy a current model good luck, it is imported garbage, I have also burned up about three PC sanders over the past two years. I now buy Festool, the stuff is exspensive but perfectly engineered and you will not have to replace it. I have a friend who has a 10 year old Festool sander that failed and they rebuilt it for under 100 bucks and had it back within a week. That is customer service

Do Not Buy This Router............. Porter-Cable is not worth the aggrivation.

PS I own a high end Cabinet shop in Colorado, I know tools........

Summary: In a router table
Comment: Fantastic on power but using the supplied base attached to a router table is not recommended. I have been using this router in my table and it is perfect for every job I have thrown at it. I barely notice a power drop when using raised panel bits on pine, there is a little bit of a draw when paneling oak. The draw back is that the base is not that friendly to changing bits and chucks, a small pain regularly but it is a big drawback when using the router with a table base plate. I can't just raise the base plate, I have to actoually take the router off the plate or else the bit change is all but impossible. Really not that big of a deal but the screws that hold the router to the plate are crappy. I think the holes are not threaded quite right. The supplied screws broke off when I tried to back them out the first time. I bought several other sizes from Home Depot but all are either too lose or too tight. I ended up re-taping the holes to a larger size and now it works fine. Hopefully this is just a fluke.

Summary: Great Idea poor quality
Comment: I like all the features and a great motor. I have had it a year and 1/2 and use it only a couple times a month. The lift system has been broken 3 times. My last PC router

Summary: Upgrade from 690
Comment: I bought this as an upgrade to my P-C 690. I had the opportunity to use a friend's 892 first. Two things I liked right away that made me decide to upgrade was the extra power which makes a big difference over the 690, and the placement and ease of the on/off switch. After using it for a fairly large job I did notice a couple of problems.

1. What my friend forgot to tell me is that he switched sub-bases so if you want to use it with standard guide bushings you must order an additional sub-base (part number 909239).

2. The motor housing gets quite hot after continued use, and to change the bit you need to grab the housing and hold tight, so gloves or something to shield your hands from the heat is needed.

I did call Porter-Cable and complained/asked about the different sub-base and was told they had a reason for making the change. I told them that since I had already sold my 690 I could not use any of my jigs that needed guide bushings with my new router and would have to order a new sub-base. The customer service rep said no problem and they would send me a new sub-base for free! So I guess in my mind that makes the problems quite minor, therefore a 5 star rating.
