Summary: headband light
Comment: Light weight, well built, unobtrusive, easily adjustable, good light level/type selection, fine battery life, a great choice for daily use, as needed.

Summary: Design Flaw?
Comment: I received the headlamp yesterday and returned it today. Once the three provided batteries were installed, the latch for the battery compartment would pop open whenever the tilt was adjusted. In my opinion, the battery compartment is designed too small. For a premium product, this was disappointing.

Summary: flicker
Comment: First time we've ever written a review but this product deserves a warning. It is not suitable for a marine environment. We use ours on our boat. We have returned ours for repair or replacement three times. After working for about a month the light starts to flicker. If you use it for reading it is unusable.

Summary: Awesome!
Comment: My fiancee and I each bought one of these super headlamps and just love them. Not only do we use them for camping and backpacking, but we also use them for bicycling in the evening. The red filter is a must have because you won't blind your camp mates with the LED (which are crazy bright even on the lowest setting). Yes this lamp is a bit more pricey that the others I think that it is worth every penny.

Summary: Great headlamp. Red lens an excellent feature.
Comment: I just got back from Yosemite, having now taken this little headlamp on four backpacks. It's almost perfect: the headband is comfortable, the rubberized indent for the on/off switch is easy to find in the dark, and the thing is very light. The red lens is a great idea; it provides enough light for many purposes (hunting down gear in a dark tent) while not blinding you. I could use this to gather firewood while still being able to glance up and see the stars.

I used it to drain some rechargeable batteries (I've been told recharging after a complete drain helps make sure they get a full recharge), and the lamp was still glowing more than a day later -- and this was after my GPS unit had rejected the batteries as uncharged. The headlamp wasn't glowing brightly by then, but still...

My only cons:
* Like most similar headlamps, when you first press the ON button, the brightest setting comes first, then you repeat the push to get to dimmer, dimmest and flashing. It would be nice if the order, instead, was dimmest, medium, brightest, flashing. That way you don't get blinded by the high beams when all you wanted was the dims.

* The battery compartment is very, very tight. It can sometimes be awkward to keep all the batteries in place while the lid is levered back on. The batteries tend to pop out if you don't get it just right.

* In a pitch black tent, you'd better remember where you put your headlamp. It would be very nice if this had a glow-in-the-dark highlight somewhere that would make it easier to find. For example, the zipper pulls on my North Face sleeping bag glow for hours and hours after dark. I'd rather have that glow on my headlamp.

Editorial Reviews:

The Petzl TacTikka Plus is a tactical version of the popular Tikka Plus Headlamp. It has all of the great features including 4 LEDs instead of 3, a push on/off button instead of a slider switch, a tiltable housing, and 3 brightness settings with strobe function. These features have been combined with a red lens that easily flips down over the LEDs for night vision. It is also water-resistant for all-weather use. The 150-hour burn time and durability of the LED makes the TacTikka Plus reliable. It doesnt throw out huge candlepower (33ft or 10m), making it ideal for activities requiring close-up lighting like trail hiking, setting up camp, and reading. The TacTikka Plus runs on 3 AAA batteries (included), and at 2.5 ounces, weighs next to nothing in your pack.
