Summary: nice saw
Comment: The saw was as advertised. It took very little set up the fence needed to be squared and the bevel lock adjusted and I was ready to cut crown molding with it. The lazer line is great for aging eyes! The read out display was nice but you had to make sure you started at zero evertime you turned the saw off and on again. Overall I'm very pleased with this saw and would recommend it to some one looking for a sliding compound miter saw.

Summary: Hitachi C12LSH Miter saw
Comment: Saw was bulkier than I had anticipated. Pleased with its overall performance though. The only thing I wish Hitachi would change is make the laser line visible as the blade is cutting your material. When you power up the saw your laser line is visible until you start moving the cutterhead down then it blocks the laser and your line disappears. Overall a well built saw with plenty of power and smnooth angle adjustments.

Comment: I have used a number of different chop saws during my weekly volunteer work over the last nine years with Habitat for Humanity. The Hitachi Dual Bevel Sliding Compond saw w/ Laser Guide and Digital Bevel Display is undoubtedly head and sholder above anything else I have ever operated. It is expensive but it is convenient to use and is smooth. My only complaint is with the poor packing they do for shipment. You get the saw and a cardboard box. That's it. One part was bent when I received the saw but Hitachi replaced it immediately (I mean almost overnight). Great saw. I would buy it again.

Comment: For all of you WOOD WORKERS with WORTHLESS comments... First of all, YOU'RE a WOOD WORKER!. You SHOULD KNOW that ANY SAW THAT HAS A FENCE whether you assemble it or not SUPPOSE TO BE CHECKED AND SQUARED by the OPERATOR!!. It went through shipping and who knows what those guys do to the packages they deliver. Second, It's a 12" blade ANYTHING THAT USES A LARGE BLADE WILL DRIFT!. If the blade wanders, you're stuffing the blade through the wood instead of letting it cut through. Third, ALL OF YOU PRO that's trippin' on a laser, Hey, go find another trade 'cause wood working is NOT your gig. Why in the hell are you concerned about a LASER. There's an on and off button on the unit, TURN IT OFF AND USE YOUR EYES!.
Dust?... Plug a vacuum into it. I mean, you're suppose to be professionals ...RIGHT!.
Basically what I'm saying is THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH A PROPERLY ADJUSTED SAW. I own this saw and do alot of those cuts that everyone complains about and have NO PROBLEMS with the unit because I took the time to check it and adjust it.

Summary: Great saw
Comment: I bought this saw to replace a 10" Delta double bevel miter saw that served me well for many years, but was too small for a lot of work that I do.

What I like:
It's heavy enough to stay still without being bolted down.
The digital display is a joke to some people, but I found it helpful when the scales were covered in sawdust, if I wanted to double check my settings, or when there's dark shadows on the scales.
It glides very nicely and all the adjustments were dead on from the factory.
The saw does not need to be running for the laser to be activated.
Lots of power, it cuts almost anything without getting bogged down.
Detents are nice and tight.
The fine tuning knobs help tweak settings so they're dead on.
The vertical handle is comfortable when the saw is at bench height, though I could see it becoming an issue if the saw is placed on the floor.

What I didn't like:
The weight. It's great for keeping it still, but this sucker is a back killer to move around.
This saw can't make a cut when placed at a 45 right miter and 45 left bevel - a tab sticking up from the left fence is too high and doesn't allow the saw to move.
The laser is a tad narrow, and doesn't go a full 1/8" for most blade kerfs.
There's no detent override.
It makes a mess with sawdust. The collection port is really high, and the bag is angled downwards, so when it becomes over full it'll drop a big clump of dust if the saw is lowered when not running.
The deck is 4-1/4" high. This is taller than some miter saw bench support brackets, and may become an issue.
Side supports arms are not included, unlike most lower-end saws.

Something that's a little silly is that unless the digital readout is turned on, the laser can't be turned on. The readout resets itself to zero every time it's shut off and turned back on, so unless the saw is set back to 0's, the display will be incorrect, though it can be reset.

Overall, it's the best saw for stationary work, unless you're a workout junkie and want something heavy to lug around instead of joining a gym.

Editorial Reviews:

Till now, getting more cutting capacity from a sliding compound miter saw meant giving up more floor space in your shop to allow for the slide rails. We’re not at all surprised it was Hitachi who came up with the innovation that keeps the capacity yet needs no clearance behind the saw –- after all, it was Hitachi who came up with the slide in the first place.

The C12LSH is packed with high-end features and Hitachi precision, garnering it the title of one of the Top 10 Innovative Tools for 2006 by Workbench Magazine. Aside from the inspired zero-clearance design, its most impressive facet might well be its capacity. Combining the slide with the 12-inch blade, you get an awesome 12-1/4-inch max width and an impressive depth of 4-3/16 inches. Even at a 45-degree right bevel and a 45-degree right miter, the max width is still a generous 8-5/8 inches and a max depth of 1-3/4 inches. And even if that stock is oak or hard maple, this saw is not intimidated and cuts beautifully without hesitation, with a 15-amp motor behind it. The large pivoting fence supports your stock up to 4-11/16 inches, plenty to cut most crown moldings vertically.

We love the LCD digital readout of the miter and bevel angles, relieving us of having to hunch and squint at the gauges. Keep in mind that this LCD reads out in half-degree increments, which may not be specific enough for the most excruciatingly detailed work, but for most of us, it’s more than adequate. Another nice feature is the ability to fine-tune your setting, whether bevel or miter, with the micro adjustment knobs that put absolute precision at your fingertips.

Whether you’re a fan of the laser cutline or not, we still think it’s a great, useful innovation, because a little extra accuracy insurance is always a good thing. Hitachi’s laser design is patented, controlled by a micro-dial that lets you adjust the line to the right or left of the cut. And unlike those on other saw brands, the laser isn’t mounted to the arbor and projects even when the blade is not moving. Sounds too good to be true? Okay, there are two downsides, as we see it. First is something you already expect with a miter saw – the dust collection is minimal. The second item in the column is this saw’s considerable weight – nearly 70 pounds – that might make it cumbersome to tote to job sites. If you’re planning to keep in it your shop, we don’t think you can do better than this saw for accuracy, features, adjustability, capacity and power. It’s a joy to use. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste
