Customer Rating: Summary: home gardener Comment: Like all 2 stroke engines it can be tempermental in starting but once going it performs with excellence.
Customer Rating: Summary: This is a 2 cycle tiller Comment: I bought the reconditioned unit. I couldn't find anywhere in the description that mentioned this was a 2 cycle motor. It just says gas. I fueled it up with the gas and oil mixture and it started on the third pull. I live in Mississippi so the soil is hard clay. It handled the clay soil well. I used it on a bed that I had removed bushes. It had a few problems with roots. I wouldn't call this thing "commercial grade". All in all I think for $169 it wasn't bad. I needed it shipped fast and I have Prime so one day shipping was only $3.99.
For an item this size thats a great price. For light beds this is perfect.
1/4 acre or less unless you have great soil already.
Customer Rating: Summary: Ryobi Tiller is a good light duty machine Comment: Overall works well in New England if soil is wet eg just rained. Found as in other reviews that to start is tough but once running did the job very effectively. Overall very pleased with the unit and have had for four months and given a signficant workout. As for starting problems found that Ryobi instructions never seem to get these to start. Pump the primer bulb eight times and put the choke at half to start, once warmed up did not experience other problems. Would also run the maching dry after each use which significantly reduced future starting issues
Customer Rating: Summary: synthetic blend oil a must? Comment: I read reviews about the machine starting and running well, then failing to start and/or run well again. I had the same problem with a gas trimmer - directions said "synthetic blend," but I figured it made little difference - it hardly worked at all with regular oil mix. Once I used the synthetic blend, however, it worked very well. So... I don't know for certain if this is the solution, but I've only used a synthetic blend oil (got mine at Sears), and the tiller has been running extremely well.
Customer Rating: Summary: cultivator in surgery needs your prayer Comment: I purchased a refurbished Ryobi Cultivator with a one year warranty. The poor thing had a heart attack five minutes out of the box- I guess the trip was too much for it. I raced it to the recommended repair technical cultivator surgeon who has gone in and gotten to the heart of the matter. The cylinder and piston were both scored. He thought it was possibly a small metal fragment left behind when it was worked on. There was no way it could maintain compression. It is on the donor list for a new cylinder and piston and there is a chance I may still get to spend some quality time with it....hopefully before September.
