Summary: NICE hammer
Comment: I was shopping for this hammer, and I didn't get it. But I'm still really happy, because I inadvertently picked up the flat face 18oz 14" handle Douglas "finish" hammer. Hey Douglas, who the hell needs a 14" axe handle nail setting side pull 18 oz trim hammer?? Despite this silliness, this is a great, I mean GREAT all-around hammer. Given the choice, I might have gone for the 20oz but 23 is too much for me right now since I'm not doing daily framing as much (like most people in the US) but if I was I'd jump at the first available excuse to get one. In comparison with other hammers at HD, the claw on the Douglas finish has the same rake as an Estwing framer, but the head is weighted better and much shorter making it fit more places. The handle is awesome and the whole thing shines beautifully. The weight seems perfect, sinking nails really effortlessly, even with the 18oz/14" combo, and the side claw is a sweet in a pinch. The nail set is the best quality I've seen and works great. I set a nail into the parking lot, first try. Finally, the overstrike protection is nice, because on the off-chance you do miss on a big swing, NO PROBLEM. Overall, I feel much more inclined to pull this beauty as often as possible, and besides making me look better, it makes work easier. I never want another hammer in my life unless it's the Douglas waffle head for heavy framing, but this will be my bread and butter hammer for as long as possible.

by the way, Hickory handles with steel heads are the ONLY way to go (shock reduction hurts your arm worse) and steel are what real carpenters have been using for a thousand years. Pick one up and you WILL NOT be disappointed.
